After watching the short presentation on Wade Davis and reading the information on Australia’s cultural diversity, I have come to realize that it is extremely important to maintain at least a minimal amount of diversity within each country. Although Australia is one of the top diverse countries in the entire world (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2010, it is slowly losing its diversity which use to be the country’s strength.
Biodiversity and cultural diversity are link to one another in such a way that if that link is broken, many aspects of what made Australia so amazing would be lost; its uniqueness as the most diverse country would diminish. For example according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there are over four hundred languages, both indigenous and non-indigenous, being spoken by over twenty-two million Australians. Those two million Australians identify with cultural and religious beliefs from over 270 ancestries; this cultural diversity aspect is what makes Australia outstanding and accepting in comparison to other countries.
I do believe that the government should make an effort in legislating and funding rights towards protecting cultural diversity due to the reason that diversity is something that cannot be easily hidden. Even though we are all human beings but we are all diverse in our own way through language, religion, ethnicities; we also offer something different though talent and logic. Keeping cultural diversity also educates others whom are unaware of other cultures; through education stereotyping can be reduced. Also, the government should be aware that once a country begins to lose its diversity many communities might not feel as secure as they once felt; resulting in a decrease in the economy.
